Why a Messenger screenshot will not hold up

How to export your Messenger chats
Messenger has no Export chat button inside a conversation. Your personal chats are end-to-end encrypted, and you download them from Messenger's message storage, in a browser on a computer. Five clicks:
Get your chats out of Messenger
On a computer, open messenger.com in your browser and sign in. Then:
- 1Click your profile photo in the lower-left corner, then Privacy & safety.
- 2Click End-to-end encrypted chats.
- 3Click Message storage.
- 4Click Download secure storage data. Enter your Facebook password if Messenger asks for it.
- 5Keep Messages and Media checked, choose Higher-quality media and the date range All time, then click Download.
Messenger takes a few minutes to prepare the file, then saves a ZIP to your Downloads folder. Inside are one JSON file per conversation and a media folder with the photos and videos.
Send the ZIP exactly as it downloaded. Do not unzip, rename or edit it. That original file is what we preserve next to your transcript.
Messenger always exports all of your encrypted chats at once; you can narrow the date range, but not pick one person. Tell us which conversation you need and we transcribe only that one. Menus are shown as they appear on messenger.com in English; the wording may differ slightly in other languages.
A chat without the lock icon?
Some chats, such as certain group chats, are not end-to-end encrypted, and they are not in the message storage file. Download them from Facebook: Accounts Center, Your information and permissions, Download your information. Choose Messages and the JSON format, and send that ZIP too.

The SHA-256 hash of your sealed manifest is anchored in the Bitcoin blockchain: a decentralized, independent proof that the export existed no later than that point in time.
