What it proves: that the page existed in that exact state no later than the timestamp, and that nothing has changed since it was sealed. Why a screenshot of the page will not hold up
You may already be looking at the decisive evidence in your case. The problem is the form it is in. A court-admissible screenshot is not a file format. It is a screenshot that arrives with a provable capture time, an integrity proof and a chain of custody. A forensic capture fixes all four weaknesses below.
"Anyone could have edited this"
A PNG from your desktop carries no integrity proof. Without a hash and a signature, the other side can call it unverifiable, and the burden lands on you.
No provable point in time
A file date is whatever your computer says it is. We anchor the capture with a Bitcoin OpenTimestamps proof and an eIDAS qualified timestamp that carries a legal presumption in the EU.
The page changes or disappears
Posts are deleted, listings pulled, prices and terms silently rewritten. Archived copies can be removed on request. Your sealed copy cannot be.
No chain of custody
Authentication requires metadata, an operator record and an integrity log that a screenshot simply does not have. We capture all of it, in an ISO/IEC 27037-style chain of custody.
Five things a court checks in web evidence
Authentication is a checklist, not an opinion. These are the five questions a web exhibit has to answer, with what the ProofSnap package puts in the file for each one.

Is the exhibit what it claims to be?
Federal Rule of Evidence 901(a) requires "evidence sufficient to support a finding that the item is what the proponent claims it is." The package answers with the captured URL, the DNS resolution behind it, the TLS certificate and the HTTP response headers recorded at capture time.

When exactly was it captured?
The capture time is taken from NTP servers rather than the operator's clock, then bound to the data by two independent timestamps: a Bitcoin OpenTimestamps anchor and an RFC 3161 qualified timestamp issued by Disig a.s., a Qualified Trust Service Provider on the EU Trusted List.

Has anything changed since?
Every file carries a SHA-256 hash listed in a manifest, and the manifest itself is signed with an RSA-4096 key whose public half ships in the package. Re-running the verification script reproduces the hashes or shows exactly which file changed.

Who handled it, and how?
A chain of custody following ISO/IEC 27037 logs every operation as a tamper-evident hash chain, including any layout change made to capture the page, such as a neutralized sticky header or a dismissed cookie banner. Nothing is silently adjusted.

Can it be admitted without a witness on the stand?
FRE 902(13) covers "a record generated by an electronic process or system that produces an accurate result, as shown by a certification of a qualified person," and 902(14) covers certified data copies authenticated by a process of digital identification. The package includes a declaration template for a custodian to complete under 28 U.S.C. § 1746.

eIDAS qualified timestamp
Court-grade in the EU
An RFC 3161 qualified electronic timestamp from Disig a.s., a Qualified Trust Service Provider on the EU Trusted List. Under eIDAS Article 41(2) it carries a presumption of the accuracy of the date and time it indicates and of the integrity of the data to which they are bound, across all 27 EU Member States, so the other side has to rebut it.
Bitcoin blockchain anchor
The manifest hash is anchored to the Bitcoin blockchain via OpenTimestamps: vendor-independent proof of capture time. Even if ProofSnap disappears tomorrow, anyone can verify it with open-source tools at opentimestamps.org.
Chain of custody
A tamper-evident hash chain logs every operation of the capture, in line with ISO/IEC 27037. It records device and extension integrity, NTP-verified time, an RSA-4096 manifest signature and the public key for independent verification.
What a capture proves, and what it does not
What it proves
- The page existed in that exact state no later than the timestamp.
- Nothing in the package has been altered since it was sealed.
- Which server and which domain the content was served from, at that moment.
- Every layout change made to capture the page is disclosed in the chain of custody, never hidden.
What it does not do
- It does not prove who wrote or published the content; attribution stays with the court.
- It does not prove what the page looked like before the capture, only what it looked like from that moment on.
- Admissibility and weight are decided by the trier of fact.
