Does a notary prove the WhatsApp messages are genuine and unaltered?

No. A notary attests to the act in front of them: your identity and signature, or that a copy is true to the page you showed them. The notary does not inspect the phone, does not verify that the export is complete, and cannot prove the messages were not edited before printing or that they were sent on the dates shown. How do I export the WhatsApp chat to certify it?

WhatsApp has a built-in per-chat export. On Android, open the chat, tap More options (the three-dot menu), then More, then Export chat, and choose Include media. On iPhone, tap the contact or group name at the top, scroll down, tap Export chat, choose Attach media and Save to Files. On WhatsApp Desktop (Mac or Windows), right-click the conversation in your chat list, click Export chat, then choose Attach media. You get a .zip with a _chat.txt file plus the media. Is a certified WhatsApp export admissible in court?

What a notary can, and cannot, do for a WhatsApp chat

Notarizing a chat is real and sometimes useful, but it is easy to overestimate. Here is the honest picture, so you buy the protection you actually need.

What a notary does

Confirms your identity and witnesses that you signed or swore an affidavit or declaration.
Can make a certified copy, stating the photocopy is a true copy of the paper you presented.
Applies a seal and a record that a court recognises as a formal notarial act.

What a notary does not do

Does not vouch for the authenticity of the original content, only that a copy matches what you showed.
Cannot detect whether a printout was edited before it was brought in, or whether the export is complete.
Cannot prove when the messages were actually sent; the notarization date is not the conversation's date.
Leaves no cryptographic integrity, so a later edit of the digital file is not detectable from the stamp.

In short, a notary vouches for the act, not for the data. The American Society of Notaries makes the same point about certified copies: the notary states only that the photocopy is a true copy of the original presented. Certification is the missing half: it proves the WhatsApp export is intact and existed at a provable time.

Export chat greyed out or missing?

Two things can hide the in-app Export chat. It is unavailable in Germany (and may be limited in a few other regions). It is also disabled when Advanced Chat Privacy is turned on for that chat, and in a group only an admin can switch it off. Turn Advanced Chat Privacy off (or ask the admin) and export again, use a device backup, or email us and we will guide you.

The primary artifact is the _chat.txt export plus its media folder (the same export you would take to a notary). For the strongest exhibit, if available also send the WhatsApp message database. What certification proves, and what it does not

What certification proves

The export existed in that exact state no later than the timestamp.
It has not been altered since it was sealed.
The raw export is preserved for later expert examination.
If you also send the sealed message database, an expert can examine the sender identifiers (the phone number and WhatsApp account each message is bound to), which materially strengthens attribution.

What it does not do

On its own the transcript ties messages to an account, not conclusively to a person; an account is not proof that a specific hand typed the message.
It is verifiable preservation, not a full forensic acquisition of the device.
Admissibility and final authorship are decided by the court.
