Are WhatsApp screenshots admissible in court? Yes, but rarely on their own.
In 2026, a WhatsApp screenshot holds up in court only once it is authenticated. On its own it has no metadata, no integrity hash and no certified timestamp, and a convincing fake takes seconds to make, so the other side can challenge it. Are WhatsApp screenshots admissible in court?
Yes, WhatsApp screenshots can be admissible, but on their own they are the weakest form of digital evidence and are routinely challenged or excluded. A screenshot is a static image with no verifiable metadata, no integrity hash and no certified timestamp, and a convincing fake can be made in seconds, so under authentication rules a screenshot alone often fails. Courts increasingly want the underlying data, not an image of it.

Why courts reject WhatsApp screenshots
A screenshot is a copy of a copy with no verifiable link to the original. These are the six weaknesses the other side reaches for, and each one is a reason to object.
Trivial to fabricate
Fake-chat generator sites let anyone set names, avatars, timestamps and blue ticks and screenshot a pixel-perfect fake in seconds. Courts know this, so even genuine screenshots are treated with suspicion.
No metadata
A screenshot carries no record of the device, account, app version or exact time. Stripped of that context, it is just an image file, not a provable record.
No integrity hash
There is no cryptographic fingerprint, so nobody can show the image was not edited after capture. A certified export carries a SHA-256 hash that makes any change detectable.
No certified timestamp
The file date on your phone is not proof of when the conversation happened. There is no independent, tamper-resistant record of the time.
No chain of custody
Nothing documents who captured the image, when, on what device, and whether it was touched before it reached the court. Authentication needs that trail.
Incomplete and selective
A screenshot shows only what you chose to capture. In e-discovery practice, screenshots are treated as image files with no metadata, and courts prefer the full conversation over a cropped image.
Are WhatsApp screenshots admissible by jurisdiction?
The principle is the same across major jurisdictions, from the US, UK and EU to India, the UAE, Nigeria, South Africa and Ghana: admissible if authenticated, weak if it is a bare screenshot. The rules and the paths differ. See the WhatsApp evidence by country hub for dedicated guides.
Under FRE 901(b)(1) you must produce evidence sufficient to support a finding that the item is what you claim, and a screenshot alone often fails, so several federal courts expect metadata and corroboration. FRE 902(14) lets data copied from an electronic device self-authenticate when a qualified person certifies it and the other side gets advance notice.
A certified export with a SHA-256 hash of every file, plus the signed technical report available at checkout, is built for that path.
Civil courts in England and Wales admit documents, defined as anything in which information is recorded, and a statement may be proved by an authenticated copy however many removes from the original. The court then weighs reliability, so judges increasingly ask for the underlying data, not a screenshot.
Weight is assessed on reliability, which a certified, authenticated export directly supports.
Electronic evidence is admitted under each member state's rules, but an eIDAS qualified timestamp carries a presumption of the accuracy of the date and of the integrity of the data under Article 41(2) of the eIDAS Regulation. A screenshot carries no such presumption.

Under the evidence law in force since 1 July 2024, an electronic record goes to court with a certificate that states its hash value, so a bare screenshot with no hash is worth little.

UAE evidence law admits information exchanged by electronic means and gives it the same weight as written evidence, provided it is kept in its original state, so integrity is the deciding question.

Nigerian law treats WhatsApp chats as computer-generated documents. They are admissible if certain conditions are met, such as the device being in regular use and working properly, and a certificate can take the place of a witness. A screenshot on its own rarely satisfies those conditions.

South African law does not let a data message be denied as evidence just because it is electronic or not in its original form. The court weighs how the message was generated, how its integrity was kept, and how the sender was identified.

Ghanaian law likewise does not let an electronic record be denied admissibility just because it is electronic. The court weighs its value by the reliability of how it was generated and stored, how its integrity was kept, and how its originator was identified.

How to make a WhatsApp screenshot admissible
You do not fix a screenshot by taking a better screenshot. You preserve and authenticate the underlying conversation. Courts look for three things, and a certified export supplies all three.
1. The full export, not an image
Export the complete conversation from WhatsApp. Structured data with thousands of timestamped messages in order is far harder to fabricate than a single cropped image.
2. Integrity and a provable date
A SHA-256 hash calculated at acquisition makes tampering detectable, and a qualified timestamp fixes when the evidence existed. Together they answer the "it was edited" objection.
3. A documented chain of custody
A record of who captured the evidence, when, and how it was handled. US self-authentication builds on it.

How to export the WhatsApp chat
WhatsApp has a built-in per-chat export on your phone (iPhone and Android) and in the WhatsApp Desktop app (Mac and Windows). Send us the export with media and we do the rest.

In the WhatsApp Desktop app on Mac or Windows, this is the quickest route:
- 1Right-click the conversation in your chat list (or click the chevron that appears on hover), then click Export chat.
- 2Choose Attach media (recommended) or Without media.
- 3The file is saved straight to your Downloads folder (a message confirms "Exported chat was saved to Downloads folder"). Send us that .zip.
You get the same _chat.txt plus media as the phone export. Desktop is easiest when the chat is already on your computer, or is too large to email from a phone.

On iPhone: open the chat with that person or group, then:

Export chat grayed out or missing?
One setting can hide the in-app Export chat: it is disabled when Advanced Chat Privacy is turned on for that chat, and in a group only an admin can switch it off. Turn Advanced Chat Privacy off (or ask the admin) and export again, use a device backup, or email us and we will guide you.

The primary artifact is the _chat.txt export plus its media folder (the full conversation, not a screenshot). For the strongest exhibit, if available also send the WhatsApp message database. We seal whatever you send, hashed and timestamped, never opened. If authenticity is ever disputed, a court-appointed technician can verify the transcript against the source. Decrypting the database needs its key, which the custodian provides separately.

What certification proves, and what it does not
What certification proves
- The export existed in that exact state no later than the timestamp.
- It has not been altered since it was sealed.
- The raw export is preserved for later expert examination.
- If you also send the sealed message database, an expert can examine it later, including the account each message is bound to.
What it does not do
- On its own the transcript ties messages to an account, not conclusively to a person; an account is not proof that a specific hand typed the message.
- It is verifiable preservation, not a full forensic acquisition of the device.
- Admissibility and final authorship are decided by the court.
