Print your WhatsApp chat for court. Free guide inside.

The full, free how-to: export your WhatsApp chat and save it as a PDF on iPhone, Android or your computer. Then the part almost every guide leaves out: why a plain PDF is the weakest form of evidence, and how to make it hold up.

Going to court over a WhatsApp conversation? A printout with no provable date and no integrity is easy for the other side to call a fake. There is a fix, and it costs less than an hour of a lawyer's time.

Quick answer

How do I print a WhatsApp chat for court?

WhatsApp cannot print directly, so you export first, then save or print to PDF. Open the chat, tap Export chat and choose to include media. You get a .zip with a _chat.txt file. On a phone, open that text file in Google Docs, Pages or Word and save it as PDF. On a computer, open WhatsApp Web, scroll the whole conversation into view, press Ctrl+P or Cmd+P and choose Save as PDF. Print the PDF.

The catch: a plain PDF has no provable date, no cryptographic hash and no chain of custody, so the other side can allege it was edited. If the conversation is going in front of a court, certify the export so its integrity is proven. See how below. ProofSnap is an evidence tool, not legal advice.

The free guide: WhatsApp to PDF, three ways

WhatsApp has no built-in print button. Every method starts by getting the conversation out of the app, then turning it into a PDF you can print. Pick the one that fits your device.

1. Export, then convert

Works on iPhone, Android and WhatsApp Desktop (Mac and Windows). Export chat gives you a text file plus media; you save it as PDF.

Steps ↓

2. Print WhatsApp Web to PDF

Best on a computer. Use the browser Print dialog and Save as PDF. Quick, but you must scroll to load the whole chat first.

Steps ↓

3. Screenshots (weakest)

Fine for a quick reference, poor for court. No full thread, no metadata, trivially editable. Use only as a last resort.

Read why ↓

Method 1

Export the chat, then save it as PDF

This is the most complete method and the safest source for evidence, because Export chat produces the full conversation in one structured file.

Step A: get the chat out of WhatsApp

On a computer, in WhatsApp Desktop (Mac and Windows)

Export from WhatsApp Desktop

In the WhatsApp Desktop app on Mac or Windows, this is the quickest route:

  1. 1Right-click the conversation in your chat list (or click the chevron that appears on hover), then click Export chat.
  2. 2Choose Attach media (recommended) or Without media.
  3. 3The file is saved straight to your Downloads folder (a message confirms "Exported chat was saved to Downloads folder"). That .zip is your source.

You get the same _chat.txt plus media as the phone export. Desktop is easiest when the chat is already on your computer, or is too large to email from a phone. No WhatsApp Desktop app? Use Method 2 below and print WhatsApp Web to PDF straight from your browser.

On your phone (iPhone and Android)

Export from your phone

On iPhone: open the chat with that person or group, then:

  1. 1Tap the contact or group name at the top to open contact info.
  2. 2Scroll down and tap Export chat.
  3. 3Choose Attach media (recommended) or Without media, then Save to Files.

On Android: open the chat with that person or group, then:

  1. 1Tap More options (the three-dot menu at the top right).
  2. 2Tap More, then Export chat.
  3. 3Choose Include media (recommended) or Without media, then pick how to save it.

Step B: turn the export into a PDF

On a computer

  1. 1Unzip the export from your Downloads folder. Inside is a _chat.txt file plus the media.
  2. 2Open _chat.txt in Word, Pages (Mac), or Google Docs.
  3. 3Use Print or Save as / Export and pick PDF. On Mac, Print then "Save as PDF"; on Windows, print to "Microsoft Print to PDF".

On a phone

  1. 1Open the exported _chat.txt from Files (iPhone) or your file manager (Android).
  2. 2Open it in Pages, Google Docs or Word.
  3. 3Use Export or the Share sheet and choose PDF. Print that PDF if you need paper.

Photos and videos are referenced by file name in the text and saved as separate files. Print any key images alongside the transcript.

Export limits to know: WhatsApp exports roughly the last 40,000 messages without media, or about 10,000 with media (iOS also caps the file size). For a very large chat, run one export with media and one without media, so nothing is cut off.

Method 2

Print WhatsApp Web to PDF from your browser

Fastest on a computer, and it keeps the familiar chat-bubble look. The trade-off is that it only captures what is loaded on screen, so a long chat needs patience.

  1. 1Open web.whatsapp.com and link your phone, then open the conversation.
  2. 2Scroll all the way up to the first message. Older messages load in batches, so wait for each batch before scrolling again, until the whole chat is on screen.
  3. 3Press Ctrl+P (Windows) or Cmd+P (Mac) to open the print dialog.
  4. 4Set Destination to Save as PDF, turn on Background graphics so bubbles and emojis render, then Save.

Heads-up: if you skip the scrolling, the earlier part of the chat will be missing from the PDF. Formatting is basic, and page breaks can split messages. This is why the Export chat method is the stronger source for anything going to court.

Method 3

Screenshots, and why they are the weakest option

Taking screenshots and pasting them into a document is the quickest route, and the one courts trust least. A screenshot is a picture: it carries no full thread, no sender metadata, no server timestamps and no integrity you can prove. It is also the easiest evidence to allege was edited.

If a screenshot is all you can get (for example the app will not export), take it, but treat it as a placeholder. Then move to a full export and certification as soon as you can, while the conversation still exists on your device.

Export chat greyed out or missing?

Two things can hide the in-app Export chat. It is unavailable in Germany (and may be limited in a few other regions). It is also disabled when Advanced Chat Privacy is turned on for that chat, and in a group only an admin can switch it off. Turn Advanced Chat Privacy off (or ask the admin) and export again, use a device backup, or print WhatsApp Web to PDF as a fallback. You can also email us and we will guide you.

See WhatsApp's guide to exporting your chat history.

Why a printed WhatsApp PDF may not hold up in court

You can print a perfectly readable PDF in ten minutes. The problem is not readability, it is proof. A plain printout is the weakest form of digital evidence and the most frequently contested, because it is missing four things a court looks for.

Under FRE 901 you must show the item is what you claim it is. A screenshot or bare PDF, stripped of metadata, hash and provenance, rarely clears that bar on its own. What courts consistently accept is the untouched original WhatsApp export, and if you convert it to a PDF you also need to document the export date, a hash of the file, and a statement that the PDF faithfully represents the original. Certification supplies exactly that documentation.

No provable date

A PDF on your computer has whatever date your device says. There is no independent proof of when the conversation existed. A qualified timestamp anchors it to a point in time that the other side has to rebut.

No cryptographic integrity

A printout has no hash. A valid electronic record carries a SHA-256 fingerprint: change one character and the fingerprint changes completely. Without it, "anyone could have edited this" is hard to answer.

No chain of custody

There is no record of who produced the file, when, from what source, and whether it was touched between export and printing. Authentication needs that trail, and a raw PDF does not carry it.

No preserved source, easy to allege editing

Copy-pasted text and cropped screenshots are trivial to alter, and a selective printout that shows only the helpful messages invites the challenge. Preserving the untouched raw export lets an expert re-derive and verify it.

The missing step: seal your export so it holds up

You have already done the hard part by exporting the chat. Instead of printing a PDF that can be disputed, send that same export to our WhatsApp chat evidence certification. We turn it into a court-ready package and deliver it within 24 hours.

Send us everything (recommended)

The primary artifact is the _chat.txt export plus its media folder (the same one you would have printed). For the strongest exhibit, if available also send the WhatsApp message database. We seal whatever you send, hashed and timestamped, never opened. If authenticity is ever disputed, a court-appointed technician can verify the transcript against the source. Decrypting the database needs its key, which the custodian provides separately.

Optional: the message database

Find your device below, then send us the folder it points to. When in doubt, send more rather than less.

Android phone

Connect by USB and copy the whole WhatsApp folder:

Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp/ (older devices /sdcard/WhatsApp/)

  • Databases/: take msgstore.db.crypt15 and every dated msgstore-...crypt15 backup
  • Media/: the attachments

Your 64-digit key: WhatsApp › Settings › Chats › Chat backup › End-to-end encrypted backup.

iPhone

The store lives inside a device backup, so make a full local backup:

  • 1.Plug into a Mac (Finder) or Windows PC (Apple Devices / iTunes)
  • 2.Tick Encrypt local backup, set a password, back up
  • 3.Send the whole backup folder:
    ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/ (Mac)
    %APPDATA%\Apple\MobileSync\Backup\ (Windows)

Encrypting the backup is what keeps the WhatsApp data complete.

Mac (WhatsApp Desktop)

Zip this whole folder as-is (needs Full Disk Access):

~/Library/Group Containers/group.net.whatsapp.WhatsApp.shared/

It keeps these together:

  • Messages: ChatStorage.sqlite with its -wal and -shm sidecars (deleted and recent messages can live only in -wal)
  • Attachments: Media/ and Message/ folders
  • Who is who: ContactsV2.sqlite and LID.sqlite
  • Keys and identity: Axolotl.sqlite and enc-key.dat

Too large to zip whole? Send at least these, each .sqlite with its -wal and -shm.

Windows (WhatsApp Desktop)

Zip the whole folder for whichever build you have:

  • Store / older app:
    %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\5319275A.WhatsAppDesktop_cv1g1gvanyjgm\LocalState\
SQLite files with their -wal / -shm and cached media
  • Newer WebView2 build (default since late 2025) and website installer:
    %APPDATA%\WhatsApp\
including IndexedDB\file__0.indexeddb.leveldb\ (all .log / .ldb files), plus Local Storage\ and Cache\

Not sure which you have? Zip both paths if present, or just tell us.

Your files stay encrypted. Keep your key or backup password yourself. We seal everything exactly as sent, hashed and timestamped, and never open it. You only hand the key to a court-appointed technician if authenticity is ever disputed. After we deliver your finished package, we delete all your data from our servers.

What you get back

A readable transcript of the whole conversation, with the images in place

Instead of a plain PDF you printed yourself, we render your conversation into a clean, line-numbered Chat Conversation Transcript PDF: every message in original send order, the photos shown inline exactly where they were sent, and every other attachment referenced by file name and linked to the preserved file inside the package.

Every message in original send order, by timestamp, numbered in the left margin so you can cite "Line 47"

Photos and images rendered inline, in place, so the message and the picture are read together

Documents, videos and voice notes referenced by file name and linked to the preserved attachment in the ZIP

Cover sheet: parties, case reference, date range, message count, source file and source SHA-256

A faithful rendering: nothing added, altered, reordered or omitted, not a selective extract

Bitcoin OpenTimestamps

The SHA-256 hash of your sealed manifest is anchored in the Bitcoin blockchain: a decentralised, independent, tamper-resistant proof that the export existed at a point in time. Subject to the court's free evaluation of evidence.

eIDAS qualified timestamp

Court-grade in the EU

Issued by Disig a.s., a Qualified Trust Service Provider on the EU Trusted List. Under eIDAS Article 41(2) it carries a presumption of accuracy of the date and integrity of the data: the other side has to rebut it.

What certification proves, and what it does not

What certification proves

  • The export existed in that exact state no later than the timestamp.
  • It has not been altered since it was sealed.
  • The raw export is preserved for later expert examination.
  • If you also send the sealed message database, an expert can examine the sender identifiers (the phone number and WhatsApp account each message is bound to), which materially strengthens attribution.

What it does not do

  • On its own the transcript ties messages to an account, not conclusively to a person; an account is not proof that a specific hand typed the message.
  • It is verifiable preservation, not a full forensic acquisition of the device.
  • Admissibility and final authorship are decided by the court.

We make the content, order and timing impossible to dispute, so the fight is about what the messages mean, not whether you faked them. Send the message database too and the package also carries the sender identifiers that tie each message to a specific number and account, which pushes attribution as far as the evidence can go. The court still assigns final authorship, as it always does.

Built to support authentication under FRE 901 and self-authentication under FRE 902(14) in the US, and the eIDAS Article 41(2) presumption in the EU. In the UK, the Family Procedure Rules allow digital evidence that is authenticated and documented. ProofSnap is an evidence tool, not legal advice.
