Why courts reject screenshots
In Kubor v. Dickson (2013) 4 NWLR (Pt. 1345) 534 the Supreme Court of Nigeria held that a computer-generated document tendered from the bar, without evidence establishing the conditions in section 84(2) of the Evidence Act 2011, is inadmissible. A screenshot fails on exactly those points. Here is why.
No timestamp proof
File timestamps can be changed in seconds. Courts know this. Without a blockchain or eIDAS-qualified timestamp, you can't prove when you captured it.
No tampering detection
Any screenshot can be edited in 10 seconds with AI. In Sept 2025, a California judge dismissed a case after discovering deepfaked video evidence. Without a SHA-256 hash, there's no way to prove yours is real.
No chain of custody

Law firm confirms: ProofSnap is usable as evidence in court
The opinion was prepared by SEDLAKOVA LEGAL s.r.o. (Brno, Czech Bar Association, Company ID 05669871) under EU law (Regulation 910/2014, eIDAS) with reference to Czech civil procedure. Cross-references to the US Federal Rules of Evidence (FRE 901, 902(13)-(14), proposed FRE 707) and the English Civil Procedure Rules (CPR 32, 35) were added by the ProofSnap team for orientation of common-law readers. The opinion does not address Nigerian law: in Nigeria the governing provision is section 84 of the Evidence Act 2011, as amended by the Evidence (Amendment) Act 2023.

Admissible across proceeding types

What a qualified timestamp is worth in a Nigerian court
Straight answer first: Nigeria is not an EU member state, so the presumption in Article 41(2) of Regulation (EU) 910/2014 does not arise before a Nigerian court. A qualified timestamp is independent technical corroboration that the capture existed at a stated moment, which the court weighs freely. The admissibility argument itself runs through section 84 of the Evidence Act 2011.
“In any proceeding a statement contained in a document produced by a computer shall be admissible as evidence of any fact stated in it of which direct oral evidence would be admissible, if it is shown that the conditions in subsection (2) of this section are satisfied in relation to the statement and computer in question.”
Section 84(1), Evidence Act 2011, Federal Republic of Nigeria. Section 84(2) sets the conditions, and section 84(4) allows them to be established by a signed certificate identifying the document, describing how it was produced, giving particulars of the device, and signed by a person occupying a responsible position in relation to its operation.

Card declined? Turn on international transactions on your naira card
Most Nigerian banks block international and online payments on naira cards by default, and cap the dollar amount. A declined ProofSnap payment is almost always the bank holding the transaction, not a system error. The same block affects the Chrome Web Store, Stripe, and any international service. Since July 2025 the major banks have re-enabled naira cards abroad, so a working card just needs the right switch turned on.
GTBank
Enable dollar spending on your naira Mastercard in the GTWorld app or at a branch. A quarterly limit (about $1,000) applies, well above a ProofSnap subscription.
UBA
Turn on international transactions in the UBA mobile app or via *919#. Naira card spending abroad is capped at about $1,000.

Paying from Nigeria: read this before you check out
A declined payment here is almost always your bank, not the checkout. Three things cause it, and all three are fixable in a couple of minutes.
1. International transactions are switched off by default. GTBank, Access Bank, Zenith Bank, UBA, First Bank and Ecobank all ship naira cards with international online payments disabled. Two minute fix: open your bank app, go to card settings or card controls, enable international transactions and online or web transactions, then wait about five minutes and retry. Some banks keep those as two separate switches.
2. There is a monthly spending cap. The Central Bank lifted its own restriction and banks now set their own limits from their FX position, but many still cap naira cards at roughly $50 to $100 per month for international spending. A one-off SnapPack sits comfortably inside that. A subscription may not, if you are also paying for other services in the same month.
3. Some naira debit cards are refused outright. Plain naira debit cards are still rejected by many international merchants regardless of your settings. A domiciliary account card, a dollar card from GTBank, Access or a fintech such as Chipper, Grey or Geegpay, or a credit card enabled for international use will go through where a standard naira debit card will not.

Regular screenshots can be challenged in court because they lack proof of when they were taken and whether they've been altered. In Nigeria, section 84 of the Evidence Act 2011 (expanded by the Evidence (Amendment) Act 2023) lets a computer-generated document in, but only when its integrity is established: the party relying on the screenshot must satisfy the section 84(2) conditions, usually with a section 84(4) certificate, and any sign the record was edited or manipulated can render it inadmissible. A plain screenshot is weak on exactly those points. Other jurisdictions apply similar authentication rules, such as FRE 901/902 in the US.
ProofSnap addresses these challenges by creating a forensic evidence package that includes: a SHA-256 cryptographic hash proving the content hasn't been modified, a digital signature for authenticity, a blockchain timestamp proving when the capture occurred, and full metadata (URL, browser info, TLS certificate). This makes your capture significantly more defensible under the section 84 integrity test than a plain image file.
ProofSnap uses three layers of cryptographic protection:
- SHA-256 Hashing: Every file in the evidence package is hashed. Changing even a single pixel or character produces a completely different hash, making any tampering immediately detectable.
- Digital Signature: The manifest (listing all files and their hashes) is digitally signed with a private key. The corresponding public key is included for anyone to verify authenticity.
- Blockchain Timestamp: The manifest hash is anchored to the Bitcoin blockchain via OpenTimestamps, creating an immutable record of when the evidence was captured. This timestamp cannot be forged or backdated.
Together, these mechanisms create a chain of integrity that proves the evidence is authentic, unaltered, and was captured at a specific point in time.
The eIDAS 2 regulation (EU 2024/1183) is fully rolling out by the end of 2026, establishing stricter standards for electronic identification, digital signatures, and qualified electronic timestamps across all EU member states.
Under Article 41, qualified electronic timestamps enjoy a legal presumption of accuracy for the date and time they indicate, and the integrity of the data to which the timestamp is linked. This means evidence timestamped with a qualified service is admissible across all EU courts.
In Nigeria the position is different. Nigeria is not an EU member state, so the Article 41(2) presumption does not arise before a Nigerian court. The qualified timestamp is independent technical corroboration of when the capture existed, which the court weighs freely, while admissibility itself is decided under section 84 of the Evidence Act 2011.

Yes. The EFCC accepts petitions in writing and through its Eagle Eye reporting app, launched by the Commission in July 2021 for reporting economic and financial crimes, and supporting documents can be attached. Capture the scammer's WhatsApp chat, Instagram profile, or payment request with ProofSnap, then attach the signed evidence PDF to your petition or hand it to the police. A petition backed by a complete, tamper-evident record is far easier for an investigator to act on than a loose set of screenshots.
ProofSnap does not report the case for you. It preserves the record in a tamper-evident package with a SHA-256 hash and a Bitcoin blockchain timestamp, so the scammer cannot later claim your screenshot was faked or taken out of context.
Under section 84(2) of the Evidence Act 2011, a computer-generated document is admissible only if you show the computer was working properly and the record was produced in the ordinary course of use. Section 84(4) lets you establish this with a signed statement, commonly called a certificate of compliance. That certificate is a legal document you or your lawyer sign, so ProofSnap does not issue it for you.
What ProofSnap gives you is the technical foundation the certificate relies on: a SHA-256 hash, an RSA-4096 digital signature, a Bitcoin blockchain timestamp, and a forensic log showing how, when, and from where the page was captured. That makes the integrity of your record far easier to attest to, and much harder for the other side to dispute.
