Regular screenshots can be challenged in court because they carry no proof of when they were taken or whether they have been altered. In India the framework is unusually specific. With effect from 1 July 2024, Section 63 of the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, 2023 replaced the certificate rule of the Indian Evidence Act, 1872: an electronic record is admissible without producing the original device, but only with a certificate. The certificate has two parts, Part A completed by the party producing the record and Part B by an expert, and both must state the hash value of the record. The Supreme Court has described that hash as an electronic fingerprint for testing whether a file has been altered.

ProofSnap addresses this by creating a forensic evidence package containing an SHA-256 hash that shows whether the content has been modified, an RSA-4096 digital signature over the manifest, a Bitcoin blockchain anchor (not on Essential) and full metadata including the URL and the capture time in UTC. The hash is generated when the page is captured rather than reconstructed later, which is the difference between a certificate that describes the record and one that describes what survived being forwarded. ProofSnap does not sign the certificate: Part A and Part B are signed by people, and nothing here is legal advice. In a ProofSnap package the SHA-256 hash of each captured file is printed in the evidence PDF and recorded in manifest.json, which is itself signed with an RSA-4096 key. Copy the hash of the screenshot or page file into the certificate and name SHA-256 as the algorithm. Both parts of the certificate state the hash, so the party completing Part A and the expert signing Part B work from the same figure. ProofSnap computes the hash at the moment of capture; it does not sign the certificate for you.

ProofSnap uses three layers of cryptographic protection:

1. SHA-256 Hashing: Every file in the evidence package is hashed. Changing even a single pixel or character produces a completely different hash, making any tampering immediately detectable.
2. Digital Signature: The manifest (listing all files and their hashes) is digitally signed with a private key. The corresponding public key is included for anyone to verify authenticity.
3. Blockchain Timestamp: The manifest hash is anchored to the Bitcoin blockchain via OpenTimestamps, creating an immutable record of when the evidence was captured. This timestamp cannot be forged or backdated.

Under Article 41(2) of the eIDAS Regulation, qualified electronic timestamps enjoy a presumption of the accuracy of the date and time they indicate and of the integrity of the data to which the timestamp is linked. The presumption is rebuttable, and admissibility itself is still decided under each member state's own procedure.

On the eIDAS plans ProofSnap adds a qualified timestamp from Disig a.s., a Qualified Trust Service Provider on the EU Trusted List, next to the SHA-256 hashes, the RSA-4096 signature and the OpenTimestamps anchor. Before an Indian court what counts is the Section 63 certificate and the hash value it states; the package supplies the hash, and people sign the certificate.

Forensic mode is an optional, deeper capture included in the Professional, Enterprise and Company plans (not in Essential or the SnapPacks).

It adds a complete archive of the page's network layer: every HTTP request and response (network.har), a WARC copy of the page, all loaded resources, and the TLS connection and server certificate details. To capture that, it attaches the debugger (the browser shows a “being debugged” banner).
