It works for public pages; for a page behind a login or paywall, use the extension. Regular screenshots can be challenged in court because they carry no proof of when they were taken or whether they have been altered. Canadian law is unusually direct about this. Under the Canada Evidence Act the burden of proving authenticity sits on whoever tenders the electronic document, and the best evidence rule is satisfied on proof of the integrity of the electronic documents system that recorded or stored it. Absent evidence to the contrary, that integrity is presumed on evidence capable of supporting a finding that the device was operating properly at all material times and that there are no other reasonable grounds to doubt it. Most common law provinces have their own electronic evidence rules built from the same uniform model, and the Ontario Evidence Act goes further by expressly recognizing reliable encryption as a way of supporting integrity. In civil matters, Quebec is a civil law jurisdiction with different rules of proof. Tribunals such as the Landlord and Tenant Board and the Civil Resolution Tribunal do not apply the rules of evidence strictly, but they still weigh how reliable a record looks, and the LTB may refuse material filed late.

ProofSnap addresses this by creating a forensic evidence package containing a SHA-256 hash of every file, an RSA-4096 signature over the manifest that binds those hashes together, a timestamp proving the package existed no later than the moment it was anchored, and full metadata including the URL and the capture time in UTC. That is a direct answer to the integrity question, and it gives an adjudicator something concrete to weigh rather than an image file with no provenance. ProofSnap uses three layers of cryptographic protection:

1. SHA-256 Hashing: Every file in the evidence package is hashed. Changing even a single pixel or character produces a completely different hash, making any tampering immediately detectable.
2. Digital Signature: The manifest (listing all files and their hashes) is digitally signed with a private key. The corresponding public key is included so anyone can verify that the manifest has not changed.
3. Blockchain Timestamp: The manifest hash is anchored to the Bitcoin blockchain via OpenTimestamps, proving the evidence existed no later than the moment of anchoring. This timestamp cannot be backdated.

Under Article 41(2) of the eIDAS Regulation, a qualified electronic timestamp enjoys the presumption of the accuracy of the date and time it indicates and of the integrity of the data to which that date and time are bound. That presumption is a rule of EU law. It does not make any item of evidence admissible, and in Canada the question remains the authentication and integrity test of the Evidence Act that applies to the proceeding.

What the timestamp adds here is independent, documented proof of the time, issued by Disig a.s., a Qualified Trust Service Provider on the EU Trusted List. ProofSnap adds it on the Enterprise and Company plans and with the eIDAS and Video SnapPacks.

Forensic mode is an optional, deeper capture mode included in the Professional, Enterprise and Company plans (not in Essential or the SnapPacks).

It adds a complete archive of the page's network layer: every HTTP request and response (network.har), a WARC copy of the page, all loaded resources, and the TLS connection and certificate details of the page. To capture that, it attaches the debugger (the browser shows a “being debugged” banner).

Give the decision-maker the evidence.pdf as the readable exhibit and keep the ZIP with it, because the ZIP holds the hashes, the signed manifest and the timestamps. At the Landlord and Tenant Board, provide your materials to the other parties and to the Board at least 7 days before the hearing, or 5 days for responding materials; uploading to the Tribunals Ontario Portal does not serve the other parties unless they agreed to that in writing.
