ProofSnap is a Chrome extension that captures web pages as legal evidence with SHA-256 hashing, a signed manifest and blockchain timestamping, so anyone can check the integrity of the evidence.

ProofSnap uses OpenTimestamps to anchor a SHA-256 hash of your evidence to the Bitcoin blockchain, creating a cryptographic proof that the capture existed no later than the block it is anchored in. This timestamp is independently verifiable and cannot be backdated or tampered with. It is included from the Professional plan up.

Yes. In the ProofSnap Dashboard at app.getproofsnap.com you paste one or more URLs and our servers load the pages and return the same sealed evidence package. It works for public pages; for a page behind a login or paywall, use the extension. A new dashboard account starts with 50 free test captures, and the dashboard and the API have their own plans, separate from the extension.

ProofSnap generates forensically sound evidence with cryptographic proofs, and the eIDAS plans and SnapPacks add a qualified timestamp. Admissibility depends on jurisdiction and specific legal requirements. Get legal advice about your particular matter.

Regular screenshots can be challenged in court because they carry no proof of when they were taken or whether they have been altered. Australian law helps, but it does not do the work for you. Under the uniform Evidence Acts a device or process which, if properly used, ordinarily produces a particular outcome is presumed to have produced it on the occasion in question. That presumption gives way to evidence that raises doubt, and the other side is free to argue that an image file says nothing about when it was made or what was edited. Note that the uniform scheme covers the Commonwealth, NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, the ACT and the Northern Territory, while Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia apply their own Evidence Acts. Tribunals such as NCAT, VCAT and QCAT are not bound by the rules of evidence at all, but they still weigh how reliable a record looks.

ProofSnap addresses this by creating a forensic evidence package containing a SHA-256 hash of every file, an RSA-4096 signature over the manifest that lists them, a blockchain timestamp (on Professional and above) showing the package existed no later than the anchoring block, and full metadata including the URL, the browser and the capture time in UTC. Screenshots of text messages, WhatsApp chats and social media posts are frequently relied on in family law parenting matters, where they are annexed to an affidavit, and in AVO, intervention order and DVO applications. What the other side attacks is authenticity (who sent the message, and when) and completeness (whether the thread was cherry-picked). ProofSnap captures the conversation as it is displayed in WhatsApp Web, Messenger or another web app, together with the URL, the capture time and a SHA-256 hash of every file, so the annexure can be checked against the evidence package. Capture it while it is still live, with the URL, the account name, the date of the post and the visible comments and reactions in the same record. Instagram Stories disappear after 24 hours, and a post often vanishes the moment its author hears about a complaint, an eSafety report or a concerns notice. ProofSnap uses three layers of cryptographic protection:

1. SHA-256 Hashing: Every file in the evidence package is hashed. Changing even a single pixel or character produces a completely different hash, making any tampering immediately detectable.
2. Digital Signature: The manifest (listing all files and their hashes) is digitally signed with a private key. The corresponding public key is included for anyone to verify that the manifest has not been altered.
3. Blockchain Timestamp: The manifest hash is anchored to the Bitcoin blockchain via OpenTimestamps, showing that the evidence existed no later than the anchoring block. This timestamp cannot be forged or backdated.

The eIDAS Regulation, as amended in 2024, sets the rules for qualified electronic timestamps across all EU member states. A qualified electronic timestamp enjoys a legal presumption of accuracy for the date and time it indicates and the integrity of the data to which it is bound. The presumption covers date, time and integrity; whether the underlying evidence is admitted remains a matter for national procedural law.

ProofSnap's Enterprise and Company plans and the eIDAS and Video SnapPacks add such a timestamp from Disig a.s., a Qualified Trust Service Provider on the EU Trusted List. In an Australian court the timestamp is independent corroboration of time and integrity, not a presumption.

Forensic mode is an opt-in capture depth included in the Professional, Enterprise and Company plans (not in Essential or the SnapPacks).

It adds a complete archive of the page's network layer: every HTTP request and response (network.har), a WARC copy of the page, all loaded resources, and the page's TLS certificate details. To capture this, it attaches the debugger (the browser shows a “being debugged” banner).
