ProofSnap is a Chrome and Edge extension that captures any web page as court-ready digital evidence in South Africa in about 41 seconds. Each capture is a signed package with a SHA-256 hash, an RSA-4096 signature and a Bitcoin blockchain timestamp, built to answer the reliability questions section 15(3) of the ECTA puts to a court.
Three capture options: single page, multi-tab browsing session (with per-tab forensic packages), or signed video proof (Auto, Manual, or Session-wide screen recording). Every capture also carries a Provenance Certificate with 8 integrity checks for deepfake detection. Under section 15(1) of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002 (ECTA) a screenshot is not shut out merely because it is a data message, but its reliability is not presumed either: section 15(3) tells the court to weigh how the record was generated, stored and communicated, how its integrity was maintained and how its originator was identified. That is the gap a signed package closes, whether the matter is a CCMA referral, a Protection from Harassment Act application or a SAPS report. Enterprise plans add eIDAS-qualified timestamps issued by Disig a.s., a Qualified Trust Service Provider on the EU Trusted List, which carry a statutory presumption inside the EU and act as independent corroboration in South Africa. Pricing starts at $8.99/month (about R149) with a 7-day free trial that requires a credit card. Used by lawyers, STR hosts, copyright enforcement firms and compliance teams in 23 countries.

A South African court does not reject a screenshot for being electronic. Section 15(1) of the ECTA forbids exactly that. What the court does instead is weigh it, and a plain image answers almost none of the questions the statute puts. Here are the three it fails on.
"In assessing the evidential weight of a data message, regard must be had to (a) the reliability of the manner in which the data message was generated, stored or communicated; (b) the reliability of the manner in which the integrity of the data message was maintained; (c) the manner in which its originator was identified; and (d) any other relevant factor." Section 15(3), Electronic Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002 (South Africa). ProofSnap is built around that list: the SHA-256 hashes answer (b), the chain of custody file answers (a), and the RSA-4096 signature plus the public key answer (c).
File timestamps can be changed in seconds. Courts know this. Without a blockchain or eIDAS-qualified timestamp, you can't prove when you captured it.
Any screenshot can be edited in seconds with a generative model, and the other side knows it. Section 15(3)(b) of the ECTA asks how the integrity of the record was maintained. Without a SHA-256 hash computed at capture, a plain image has no answer.
Who captured it, when, on what device, and how was it stored? A screenshot answers none of it. Section 15(3)(a) and (c) of the ECTA ask precisely those questions, and comparable rules apply under FRE 901 in the United States.

Built for how disputes start in South Africa
Most South African disputes never begin in the High Court. They begin with a WhatsApp message, a Facebook post, or a listing that vanishes the moment it matters. Whether you are building a CCMA case file, applying for a protection order, or relying on section 15 of ECTA, ProofSnap locks the record in seconds, with a signed PDF and a SHA-256 hash that stands up when the other side says "that screenshot is fake".
CCMA arbitrators routinely decide unfair-dismissal cases on WhatsApp group messages and social posts. Whether you are the employer or the employee, lock down the relevant messages when you open the case file, before anyone deletes or edits them.
South African courts award real damages for defamatory posts, and even being tagged in one can make you liable. Preserve the exact post, the account, and the timestamp while it is still live, so you can prove publication before it is taken down.
The Protection from Harassment Act 17 of 2011 covers electronic communication, and gives you a fast, low-cost protection order at the magistrate's court. Your application is only as strong as the evidence: capture the messages and posts as a tamper-evident package.
"EFT first, then I courier it." Then the seller blocks you. Lock the listing, the price, the delivery promise, and the chat before the account disappears, so you have proof for your SAPS report or bank dispute.
If you are dealing with a single scam or one bad actor, a one-time SnapPack is a single up-front purchase, with no subscription, no auto-renewal, and no trial. Or send us the link and our team captures the court-ready package for you, no install required.
Guides for South African matters

Damages, a protection order or the Equality Court.
No automatic refund, so the file you lodge is the case.
South African law has no statutory presumption equivalent to Article 41(2) of the EU eIDAS Regulation, so treat the qualified timestamp here as independent corroboration under the section 15(3) reliability enquiry rather than as a presumption. Different country? See ProofSnap in Nigeria, the UK, Australia or Canada.
The legal framing on this page rests on the following primary sources. Check them rather than taking our word for it.
ProofSnap is not a law firm and does not give legal advice. Section 15 does not oblige anyone to accept your capture, and it does not make a screenshot admissible on its own. It removes the objection that a record is inadmissible merely because it is electronic, and it directs the court to weigh the record. The hearsay rules still apply separately: section 3 of the Law of Evidence Amendment Act 45 of 1988 governs the credibility of the human author, while section 15 governs the machine side. What our package does is give you the material to win the weight argument that section 15(3) sets up.
Don't trust us. Trust the math.
Most web-evidence tools force you to depend on them. ProofSnap evidence is self-verifiable: anyone with the ZIP can confirm authenticity using open standards (SHA-256, OpenTimestamps, eIDAS), with or without ProofSnap continuing to exist.

Independent legal opinion · 21 April 2026
The opinion was prepared by SEDLAKOVA LEGAL s.r.o. (Brno, Czech Bar Association, Company ID 05669871) under EU law (Regulation 910/2014, eIDAS) with reference to Czech civil procedure. Cross-references to the US Federal Rules of Evidence (FRE 901, 902(13)-(14), proposed FRE 707) and the English Civil Procedure Rules (CPR 32, 35) added by the ProofSnap team for orientation of common-law readers.
FRE 901 · FRE 902(13)-(14) · CPR 32 · eIDAS Art. 41
ProofSnap outputs are usable as means of evidence in civil, criminal and administrative proceedings. Authentication satisfied under FRE 901 / 902 in the US, CPR 32 in the UK, and free evaluation of evidence in EU systems, reinforced by US case law (Vayner, Lorraine v. Markel, Mendones).
Notarial deed · Court reporter affidavit
The opinion describes ProofSnap as "a suitable and economical alternative" to notarial fact certification of website state. Court-reporter affidavits and notarial deeds (US $200-500, UK £200-800) require waiting time during which content can disappear; ProofSnap captures immediately with cryptographic integrity.
eIDAS Art. 41(2) · Regulation (EU) 910/2014
The qualified eIDAS timestamp issued by Disig a.s., a Qualified Trust Service Provider on the EU Trusted List, carries the statutory presumption of accuracy of date, time and data integrity, shifting the burden of disproof to the opposing party, directly across all 27 EU Member States.
“The outputs of the ProofSnap service are, from the perspective of Czech procedural law and the EU legal framework, generally usable as means of evidence in any type of proceedings.”
Conclusion of the legal opinion, SEDLAKOVA LEGAL s.r.o., 21 April 2026
The opinion is publicly accessible, no registration. The conclusions express the legal view of the author and do not constitute binding legal advice.
South Africa is not an EU member state, so the eIDAS presumption does not arise in a South African court. Article 41(2) of Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 shifts the burden in EU member state courts. Before the High Court, a magistrate's court or a CCMA commissioner, the qualified timestamp is independent technical corroboration that the tribunal weighs freely under section 15(3) of the ECTA, which is still worth a great deal because the time is attested by a third party outside ProofSnap.
"A qualified electronic time stamp shall enjoy the presumption of the accuracy of the date and the time it indicates and the integrity of the data to which the date and time are bound." Article 41(2), Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 (eIDAS). That presumption operates in the courts of EU member states. South Africa is not an EU member state, so a South African court is free to attach whatever weight it considers appropriate under section 15(3) of the ECTA.

Most South African banks switch off international and online (e-commerce) card payments by default, as a fraud control. A declined ProofSnap payment is almost always the bank holding the transaction, not a system error. The same block affects the Chrome Web Store, Stripe, and any international service. This is not a limit problem: your online purchase allowance is far above a subscription. You just need the switch on and the 3D Secure step approved.
Capitec
In the Capitec app, open card controls and switch on online and international purchases, then approve the payment in the app when prompted.
FNB, Standard Bank, Absa, Nedbank
Under card settings or limits in the banking app, enable online and international payments. Some banks reset this after a few days, so switch it on just before you pay.
3D Secure OTP
Approve the payment with the one-time PIN or in-app prompt. If nothing arrives, ask your bank to confirm your card is registered for 3D Secure.
Credit card works best
Credit cards clear international subscriptions more reliably than some debit cards. A one-time SnapPack is an option if you would rather not subscribe.
Two-minute fix: Open your banking app, go to card controls or limits, switch on both "online" and "international" purchases, then retry and approve the 3D Secure prompt.
Prices are in USD. Prefer not to start a subscription? A one-time SnapPack is a single up-front purchase, with no subscription, no auto-renewal, and no trial.

Regular screenshots can be challenged in court because they lack proof of when they were taken and whether they have been altered. In South Africa, section 15(1) of the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002 (ECTA) stops a data message being rejected just for being electronic, but it does not make the screenshot admissible on its own and it does not displace the hearsay rules, which are governed separately by section 3 of the Law of Evidence Amendment Act 45 of 1988. Reliability is not presumed either: section 15(3) directs the court to weigh how the record was generated, stored and communicated, how its integrity was maintained and how its originator was identified. A plain screenshot is weak on exactly those points. Other jurisdictions apply similar authentication rules, such as FRE 901/902 in the United States.
ProofSnap addresses these challenges by creating a forensic evidence package that includes: a SHA-256 cryptographic hash proving the content hasn't been modified, a digital signature for authenticity, a blockchain timestamp proving when the capture occurred, and full metadata (URL, browser info, TLS certificate). This makes your capture significantly more defensible under the ECTA reliability test than a plain image file.
ProofSnap uses three layers of cryptographic protection:
Together, these mechanisms create a chain of integrity that proves the evidence is authentic, unaltered, and was captured at a specific point in time.
South Africa is not an EU member state, so the eIDAS presumption does not arise in a South African court. Article 41(2) of Regulation (EU) No 910/2014 gives a qualified electronic timestamp a presumption of the accuracy of the date and time it indicates and of the integrity of the data it is bound to, and that presumption operates in the courts of EU member states, not before the High Court, a magistrate's court or a CCMA commissioner.
In a South African matter the qualified timestamp is independent technical corroboration that the tribunal weighs freely under section 15(3) of the ECTA, alongside the SHA-256 hashes, the RSA-4096 signature and the OpenTimestamps Bitcoin anchor. It carries real weight because a third party outside ProofSnap, namely Disig a.s., a Qualified Trust Service Provider on the EU Trusted List, attests the time.
The eIDAS timestamp matters most when your South African matter has a European leg: an EU counterparty, an EU platform, or enforcement in an EU member state. There the Article 41(2) presumption does apply, and the same evidence package carries it without any extra step.
